Hardly half-assed!

Loved your review. I'm re-watching IB in the context of QT's preoccupation with inverting historical victims and victimizers, and inverting history itself, plus the entire reflexive nature of the film using film, cinema, theatre, projection, photographing, and film stock itself as the major theme and set-piece.

In light of his Herculean efforts to resurrect Ultra Panavision 70 for origination and presentation of H8, it makes the importance of and affection for film in IB something of a precursor. He was ...I agree that Jeremy played a stellar game. He was in control for most of the game, was liked and respected by everyone else, found two idols, won a key immunity challenge, and made the right choices at every step of the way. The best part of his game was something that didn’t come though the screen super clearly – he was connected to and trusted by everybody to the degree where they couldn’t bring themselves to vote against him until the very end. But I wouldn’t say that he’s a top tier winner. He was out of the loop at 2 tribal councils. Jeremy was out of the loop the night Stephen left, and he was out of the loop at F6 as well. F6 highlighted the biggest hole in his game, as he was the only one who Kimmi actually fooled. He thought Kimmi was loyal to him. He was saved because Spencer and Tasha were aware of what was happening and tipped Jeremy off.

You say that the players were negative about Spencer in exit interviews. This is what the cast had to say about him in the word-association in Gordon Holmes’ Xfinity exit interviews; where he asks them to share their thoughts on each player. This is what the cast had to say about Spencer

VYTAS: He was playing hard
SHIRIN: Tyrion Lannister. He’s smarter and more strategic than everybody. But because of appearances people don’t want to admit it. And people treat him unfairly.
PEIH-GEE: He’s an earnest, smart, intelligent kid. I love him.
VARNER: Smart. Odd. He’s too smart for his own good. I thought for a while that he might be autistic. Like brilliantly autistic. He’s not in touch with his emotions. One of my proudest moments was when I voted out Shirin and made Spencer cry.
MONICA: “Survivor” superstar.
WOO: Crafty.
KASS: Spencer is probably too cerebral for his own good.
SAVAGE: A brilliant young kid. I’ve got a lot of respect for him.
KELLY: Spinning around in circles.
CIERA: Spencer is so very smart. He’s like a little brother.
STEPHEN: Spencer was my blindspot in the game. You have to trust people in “Survivor.” But, you want it to be a strategic trust. I said to myself, “I’m going to make the strategic decision to trust Jeremy.” You have to trust people, and if he chooses to screw me, I’m done. With Spencer I made the emotional decision to trust him because, it’s Spencer! From the “Survivor” community! RHAP! I considered him a friend. As a result of that I saved him a few times in the game. I did not see it coming. And that’s not to say I blame Spencer for doing what he did. I just wouldn’t have thought that he would flip in that moment. Obviously, I was wrong.
JOE: Witty.
ABI MARIA: I’m not really a fan of Spencer right now. Spencer can go die in a fire.
JEREMY: Spencer is my brother.

So Spencer wasn't hated by this cast. You say his social game was “falling flat in real life” but plenty of people had positive things to say about him in interviews. During episodes 3 and 6, Jeremy and Savage both gave very positive reviews of Spencer in confessionals. So at worst, Spencer’s jury management/social game could be described as hit or miss. You say Spencer was a goat, but he wasn't. Goats r carried to the end 'cause the person doing the carrying knows the goat can’t win. Spencer wasn’t carried; he had as much say in terms of who stayed or left as anyone else did (example: Stephen blindside). And his social game was fine for most of the season – it was just at the F6 and F4 tribal councils that it fell apart. Kelley said that it was towards the end that Spencer got cocky and bossy, and that was when the jury lost respect for him. Obviously that’s not good, but at it’s better than someone like Russell, who never even had the juries respect in the first place. You say that Spencer might not have beaten Abi. Even if the jurors had issues with Spencer, they would not have crowned Abi the victor. When you make someone the winner, you’re making them the person that your season is remembered for. These players, who were so focused on reminding us that their season is an epic evolution of the game wouldn't want ABI to go down as the one who beat them all.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-78292314271173336262015-10-31T03:29:38.868-04:002015-10-31T03:29:38.868-04:00Hey, Weird Al spoofed Hold Me, Thrill Me... Sh...No way could Trish have beaten Tony at the end. She played a great game (her best move was recruiting Kass) but everyone said in exit interviews that they had no idea how well she was playing the game until they watched her on television. Their perception of her was that she was just another of Tony's pawns. She'd have gotten the same level of respect as Woo.

I don't think that the Tyler Perry idol should bring Tony's spot on the rankings down at all, because unlike Yul's super-idol Tony's super-idol didn't effect his game at ALL.

Think about it. He finds the idol at final eight, and doesn't tell anybody about it, and he doesn't play it. Therefore, he gets through the final eight without ANY help from Tyler Perry. At final seven he finds another idol and shows it to everyone to stop them voting for him. But the idol he showed everyone was a regular idol. He got through final seven without the help of the Tyler Perry idol.

At final six he announced that the had the special idol. But nobody believed him. The three brains had a conversation and they all agreed that Tony didn't have a special idol. Kass said as much in a confessional. They all thought he was bluffing. Kass and Woo abandoned the plan because they thought Tony was a desirable finals opponent, not because he had an invincible idol. At final five he played his regular idol. So no matter how people voted, he would have gotten through final five without making use of the TP idol.

I don't think his bluff that it could be used at final four made a difference. Spencer was always going to be the final four target. He was the last remnant of the minority alliance, and Kass/Woo/Tony all knew that he was the most dangerous person in challenges and in front of the jury. Tony's idol bluff was SMART, it didn't hurt him, but he would have gotten through final four without the special idol, Spencer was always gonna be the target.

So I don't think points should be deducted from him for having a super-idol. Unlike Yul, he didn't coast on it. Finding it was still a great move, because doing so kept it away from the minority alliance.

Tony has to be WAY above mid-tier in your rankings. Top seven at least. Think about it. He starts out on the outside of the Cliff/Sarah/Lindsay/Woo alliance on the Brawn tribe, but he tricks Sarah into turning on Lindsay and Cliff. This puts them on the bottom and gets himself and Trish into the majority. As you said, he made a wise move of going with the LJ/Trish/Jefra faction. He pulled off two great moves in blindsiding LJ and Jefra (by blindsiding Jefra he kept around Spencer and Tasha, two people that HAD to be taken out before himself and Woo; he was keeping around two shield for himself and his pawn) and he was the one making the decisions for his alliance. Here's how I know that it was him who was making the decisions. In her Ponderosa video, Morgan said that Tasha went up to Tony and begged and pleaded with him to keep her around. Obviously Tasha would make her appeal to the person who had the most power and influence, otherwise the person she went to might not be able to convince the majority alliance to keep her around.

So yeah, he worked his way up from the bottom, controlled the whole post-merge game, and always took out the threats before they took him out. That has to be a top seven victory at the very least.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-15361764073167570482014-05-27T00:16:53.203-04:002014-05-27T00:16:53.203-04:00You'll see about Tina and Aras once I post my ...You'll see about Tina and Aras once I post my updated winner rankings! (cheap plug)

I agree that a 'winner from Redemption Island' would almost automatically have to be the new Worst Winner Ever just because the concept is so stupid and so antithetical to what Survivor is all about. I'd be hard-pressed to rank a winner who was actually voted out at one point of their game as anything but the worst.

Players like Monica are in a tough position strategy-wise since they're basically damned if they do or damned if they won't. Monica's game was respected so little by the jury that she would've lost to basically anyone, no matter what she did (Kass found herself in the same spot this season, except it was more personal.) Had Monica flipped on Tyson/Gervase at some point, it doesn't really help her since she wouldn't get their votes in a F3 anyway, and she only increases her chances of getting eliminated prior to F3 anyway by the Ciera/Caleb/Hayden group.Question Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00267485396018087075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-2395642967452546222014-05-26T23:30:06.885-04:002014-05-26T23:30:06.885-04:00Monica played a very good game. Her secret scenes ...Monica played a very good game. Her secret scenes showed that she knew what she was doing, and that she was analyzing all her options carefully. The only reason those scenes weren't included in the episodes was that the editors were going out of their way to justify her second-place finish to the audience. Monica was the key swing vote at several tribal councils, and won more challenges than anybody else. At the very least her game was competent. Gervase, how can you not love his game? He was running the show with Tyson, the two of them were making the decisions together. He did a great job of using Tyson as a shield.

I actually think there was merit to Tyson not using his idol at F6. He didn't want the surviving members of the opposing alliance to find it. What's more, drawing the black rock wouldn't have been that detrimental to him. He just would have gone to Redemption Island, where he would undoubtedly have kicked ass (he has the PERFECT type of athleticism for Survivor challenges) and then returned to the final five with an idol in his pocket.

I agree that the returning players/new players dynamic is an asterix next to his win. But he deserves to be higher up on the list than Rob because unlike Rob he had six returning players to compete against (he never actually played with Candice or Rupert, and seeing as Colton quit I don't count him as a competitor) and he won it on his third try, while Rob won it on his fourth.

Two last things: Do Aras and Tina move up or down based on their S27 performance? If a person resurfaces from RI are they the new worst winner ever? I say yes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-29623024661977323692014-05-26T03:22:32.656-04:002014-05-26T03:22:32.656-04:00I'm not sure how much credit Tony deserves for...I'm not sure how much credit Tony deserves for this given that Kass was so unpopular she would've been destroyed by seemingly anyone in a final vote. It's also seemingly apparent that had Tasha or Spencer had gotten to the end, they would've won easily. Trish might well have done the same depending on how the jury recognized her social game.

That said, Tony knew he was coming off badly with his aggressive game and thus got rid of the bigger threats (LJ, Tasha, Spencer, maybe even Jefra and Jeremiah) he'd face in a final jury. It's somewhat like how Brian Heidik knew he wouldn't be able to keep up his nice guy charade for the whole game since he knew he'd eventually be screwing people over, but he got himself to the end with the one person (Clay) who the majority of the jury hated even more. Gervase's only strategy was to get into a solid alliance and stick to it, which obviously isn't a bad idea (lots of winners have taken that same route) yet it's somewhat unoriginal. Caleb and Hayden were good players but if they were REALLY good players they would've busted up the Tyson/Gervase alilance when they had the chance.

If you believe internet buzz, the untold story of this season was that Tina/Katie/Aras/Vytas had a pre-show alliance planned out, this became obvious on the island and the other players moved quickly to totally snuff it out. Had that big (and semi-unfair) alliance not been looming on the other side, Ciera/Hayden/Caleb likely move to ditch Tyson/Gervase/Monica sooner, and thus changing the game.

Tyson isn't a bad player by any means and he's obviously improved by leaps and bounds from his first two appearances. It's just that there are enough holes in his game that I rate several of the other winners ahead of him and (again) he had a big advantage in playing in a veterans vs. newbies scenario.Question Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00267485396018087075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-66608895399792015762014-05-25T21:26:06.887-04:002014-05-25T21:26:06.887-04:00One thing you aren't giving Tyson enough credi...One thing you aren't giving Tyson enough credit for is how stiff his competition was. Out of the post merge crowd Hayden, Monica, Aras, Tina, Vytas, Gervase and Caleb were all savvy strategists. The only post-merge players who were truly incompetent were Ciera, Katie, and Laura M, who for all her challenge prowess was voted out at two of the five tribal councils she attended (discounting the five minute vote-off, which wasn't a real tribal council). So I think Tyson deserves more credit than you're giving him for outwitting such great players. I think we can both agree that Tony would have CRUSHED Kass in a jury vote. So Tony managed to navigate to the final 3 with two players that he'd EASILY beat at the end, and both those players wanted to take him to the finals. Essentially, he put himself in a position where he couldn't lose. For that reason alone he should be above the middle.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-32305193388372223442014-03-25T00:03:16.384-04:002014-03-25T00:03:16.384-04:00graem and phil bauer should be higher and how do y...graem and phil bauer should be higher and how do you not include Alan wilson i would say he is definitely top 3 for the pure fact he was behind everything since david palmers deathAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-46967530983630292272014-02-12T14:15:06.960-05:002014-02-12T14:15:06.960-05:00interesting lyrics to Invisible "there is no ...interesting lyrics to Invisible "there is no them" considering U2's roadie put a plug in my house that resembled a "bug" and when I played music for U2's roadie, before I played, he said, "don't practice it here, don't let "them" know what you've got."
