Hardly half-assed!

Loved your review. I'm re-watching IB in the context of QT's preoccupation with inverting historical victims and victimizers, and inverting history itself, plus the entire reflexive nature of the film using film, cinema, theatre, projection, photographing, and film stock itself as the major theme and set-piece.

In light of his Herculean efforts to resurrect Ultra Panavision 70 for origination and presentation of H8, it makes the importance of and affection for film in IB something of a precursor. He's far more than just a fan of celluloid.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10339042611371786848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-39664791833170368952013-08-27T08:47:57.141-04:002013-08-27T08:47:57.141-04:00When you called the Churchill impersonator "h...When you called the Churchill impersonator "half-assed" I think you should consider that he was half-Churchill, half-Hitchcock cameo. With the shot references to Dial M...Psycho and the "revealing the bomb", you can see the consistency in acknowledging Hitchcock as the Prime Minister of film. This connects briefing a spy with auditioning an actor.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-63402617896094771282013-01-12T23:02:33.750-05:002013-01-12T23:02:33.750-05:00Just a note about the "ridiculous pipe" ...Just a note about the "ridiculous pipe" you reference a couple times. It's QT's not so subtle clue about the nature of Landa. The Meerschaum Calabash pipe is very associated in pop culture with Sherlock Holmes. When Landa lights that big puppy up, QT is telling us to pay attention because Landa is not going to miss a single clue, no matter how tiny.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-17132723915494398922012-09-08T18:25:06.403-04:002012-09-08T18:25:06.403-04:00Just caught up with IG.

For instance:
At 4 different occasions in the movie a character is faced with a life-and-death choice, twice in what are described as "Mexican stand-offs." Entire conversatIonal set pieces are constructed to bring us to the nub of those choices. Why? Why so many? You don't mention this blindingly obvious and repetitive device.
"Is one responsible for the name others give to one?" Landa asks about his sobriquet. What about Toller, "The Nation's Pride"? What about Maximilian, the Nazi soldier's son whose name is deliberately and repeatedly spelled out by QT.
Think and be skeptical that dull ideas - there are no good guys in war - don't encrust your writing. They make it boring.

There are good guys in war - there aren't many nice guys. There is a difference, in spite of what you learned in kindergarten.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-66836517026709259762010-11-12T16:07:00.470-05:002010-11-12T16:07:00.470-05:00Only saw the movie for the first time yesterday an...Only saw the movie for the first time yesterday and loved it.

Don't forget that in addition to ordering a glass of milk for Shosanna, he also says "I had one more question I wanted to ask you but I forgot it" or something like that.

Zoller shoots off his gun hundreds of times in that clock tower and becomes a national hero, but he wants to shoot off his, er, 'gun' with the pretty local theatre owner and look what happens. The theater in the movie filled with Nazis cheering the death of their enemies soon was replaced by the theater I sat in cheering the death of those Nazis. As you say, I think it is clear the Nazis deserve their fate in the movie, but I think QT intentionally extends the lust for revenge theme to the audience.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-35361521029556423102009-12-27T00:29:22.139-05:002009-12-27T00:29:22.139-05:00great reviewgreat reviewAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-19183289063538148432009-11-15T07:24:47.437-05:002009-11-15T07:24:47.437-05:00Yeah Daryl Hannah was the fantastically shit-scary...Yeah Daryl Hannah was the fantastically shit-scary Elle Driver =3

Good review by the way, shall develop some of these points for an Art History essay- shall give you full credit in my bibliography though =]Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14435634.post-54966385460043658362009-09-03T15:58:20.872-04:002009-09-03T15:58:20.872-04:00Uhg.
